Investigation

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division is made up of one Investigator who investigates major crimes such as sexual assaults, burglaries, child abuse, physical assaults, homicide, financial and internet crimes, as well as assisting the patrol deputies when necessary.

The Investigator follows will up on reports taken by patrol officers. He also receives reports from Family Services and the County Attorney’s Office, and handles assignments directed by the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, or Sergeant. He can also assist in investigating crime scenes with photographs, fingerprints, and other forensic evidence.

Cases that are sent to Investigative Division by patrol deputies are reviewed by the Investigator and followed up on appropriately. If there are no leads, the case is filed as inactive. If there is additional information surfaces the case can be reopened and investigated at such time.

The Investigative Division is also in charge of undercover operations such as alcohol and tobacco stings and drug sale crimes. All background checks for hiring within the department are handled by the Investigative Division. The Investigative Division also assists with internal investigations for other agencies.
