The Project Lifesaver program has been implemented by the Lyon County Sheriff's Office in an effort to provide enhanced support and assistance to Lyon County residents who are the primary caregivers for an individual suffering from Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia disorder as well as families of children afflicted with Down Syndrome, autism, traumatic brain injuries, or cognitive impairments.

The mission of Project Lifesaver is to bring your loved one's home.

Project Lifesaver is a radio tracking system designed for people with diagnoses that involve a wandering risk. The client wears a transmitter on his or her wrist or ankle that emits a unique radio signal once every second, 24 hours a day. If the client wanders and becomes missing, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office will deploy specially trained electronic search specialists to the area that the client was last seen and begin searching using radio receivers. These radio receivers can detect the signal for up to a mile on the ground and five-seven miles from in the air.

These individuals might be prone to wander away from home and become confused or lost. Project Lifesaver allows for a proactive response by law enforcement if this happens. This not only saves time and manpower but also, gives caregivers and families peace of mind and reassurance that all possible resources will be utilized in the effort to locate and return their loved one home safely.

Search times have been reduced from days and hours to minutes.  Average recovery times are well under 30 minutes. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office serves as the lead agency for Project Lifesaver in our area and in this role; we coordinate the overall operations and management of the program to ensure effective services.
